Medics warn star she must take it easy to ensure full recovery

X Factor bosses undecided on whether another guest judge will be brought in to replace Cheryl

She's making 'good progress' now... but friends say she was 'close to death' last week

Cheryl Cole, who is recovering from malaria, has pulled out of the X Factor boot camp stages and V Festival

Cheryl Cole will not be taking part in the X Factor boot camp stages or performing at V Festival, a spokesman for the star confirmed tonight.

The news comes following reports the singer was so sick last week battling deadly malaria that friends feared she could die.

Cheryl, 27, apparently has contracted one of the deadliest strains of the illness, which has left her weak, jaundiced and unable to talk.

She is now making 'good progress' after being moved out of intensive care on Friday to recover in a private clinic.

But medics have warned the hard-working star that she now need to take things easy to ensure a full recovery.

The boot camp stages of the X Factor are scheduled to start filming on July 22, while V Festival takes place in Chelmsford and Stafford on August 21 and 22.

A spokesman for Cole told MailOnline: 'Cheryl Cole is making good progress but following medical advice she will not be able to take part in X Factor's boot camp stage or perform at V Festival.'

A source told MailOnline that no decision has yet been made on whether another guest judge will be drafted in, specifically to replace Cheryl.

An ITV spokesman added: 'Cheryl will not be attending The X Factor boot camp later this month. Our priority is to ensure Cheryl is fit and well before she returns to work and to give our contestants a fair and proper opportunity to compete in the show.'

The News of the World today reported that Cole had contracted the deadliest form of malaria following her trip to Tanzania last month with Derek Hough, who she is rumoured to be dating.

A source told the newspaper: 'It got so bad she was literally only hours from death's door.

'The fact is, we came close to losing someone very special.

Cheryl was released from intensive care at the Tropical Diseases specialist unit at University College Hospital in central London on Friday.

She was moved to a nearby private clinic to continue her recovery. Earlier last week she was transferred to University College Hospital from the private Cromwell Hospital in West London.

The Mail also revealed last week how the stricken star has 'fluid on her lungs.'

'Even now she can't talk. She drifts in and out of consciousness and when she comes round all she can do is sob,' the News of the World's source added.

Worried: A tense looking Derek Hough kept vigil at Cheryl's bedside while she was in intensive care last week

It is likely that Cole will not be seen in public for the next two months while she recovers from the illness.

She has already missed this weekend's X Factor auditions in Manchester.

Pussycat Doll star Nicole Scherzinger performed the role of guest judge and was drafted in to replace Dannii Minogue, who is currently on maternity leave after giving birth last Monday.

The timing of the release of Cheryl's second album - which had been due in October - is also likely to be under pressure.

It is believed Mrs Cole caught malaria after being bitten by a mosquito while on holiday in Tanzania last month with US dancer and close friend Hough.

Hough, 25, been at her side during her stay in intensive care –as has her mother Joan Callaghan.

The singer had been feeling ill for a week – but her health problems came to light when she dramatically collapsed at a photo-shoot on last Saturday.

At first it was believed she was suffering from exhaustion or gastro-enteritis – and she was ordered to rest.

However, the following day her condition deteriorated rapidly.
