Screen stars: Angelina Jolie has been confirmed to play Cleopatra in the new film, while producers are hoping to sign up Brad Pitt as Marc Anthony
Angelina Jolie has signed up to play Cleopatra in a new film about the Queen of the Nile.
Jolie will follow British actress Elizabeth Taylor in playing Cleopatra in a major new movie centred around one of history's most famous women.
Taylor starred in the most memorable biopic about Cleopatra in 1963 alongside her real-life lover Richard Burton as Marc Anthony.
Biography author Stacy Schiff believes Jolie would be perfect for the role.
She said: 'I think she'd be perfect for it and I can see a possible Oscar in her future. Physically, she's got the perfect look.'
Lovers: Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor famously played Cleopatra and Marc Anthony in the 1963 film
She also said Jolie's partner Brad Pitt would make be the ideal choice to play Marc Anthony, adding: 'For Marc Anthony - Brad Pitt.
'They are the Burton and Taylor of our day, reconciling and breaking up within a day in the tabloids.'
Schiff's book Cleopatra: A Life isn't published until later this year but a script for the film is already underway.
A spokesman for Rudin confirmed: 'The movie is being developed for and with Jolie.'
The 1963 film about Cleopatra was one of the most expensive films ever made costing over $44million - the equivalent of more than $300million today.
Taylor's passionate affair with Burton while making the film caused a worldwide scandal.
