I along with many more are graduating every year and filing for there OPT. Few students are lucky, as they are able to find corporate employers (not desi's) who would sponsor H1. But for others, time is the constraint so they have to find alternatives. Hence for most OPT students the option is to look for desi employers.
I feel the problem that employers (small to midsize) are not educated about H1 B process. If this happens most of the problems will be solved. But for now with so many students graduating every semester, the only option is to go through desi employers, which in a way is not a bad idea (when you think long term).
There are many sites that provide valuable information.
www.desiopt.com is one of the many sites that helps students in this matter.
www.Sulekha.com also provides information on some good companies.

For my part, I send an email everyday to the white house and the state dept. This is probably not enough.....but may be some day it will work.

Thats true. There will be supply of more 485s to the pool but that will be from EB1 and EB2 row which are always current. I guess you could reduce the 140k/year based on those numbers but since these cats are always current does it suggest there is not much demand?

I agree, at some point, things break even, because people will frankly get fed up and leave. That point will be somewhere between 10-20 years. And we will then be congratulating the two or three Indians who wait this out.
This was just an attempt to model in the absence of reliable information, and to try and get as reliable information as can possible be got. I wish we could get more data and links here than we currently have (just one I think.)
The modelling on this thread shows wait times of 15-20 years for India, about 5 years for ROW, and somewhere in between for China (I think China will be closer to ROW than India just because their backlogs for 2001 and 2002 were one fourth that of India.)
The purpose of the exercise was to estimate wait times based on some solid data. Who is getting screwed, and by how much. (Looks like, the answer to 'who' is Indians, and the answer to 'how much' is 'A lot'.)
People will naturally not wait for 20 years to get a greencard. Either things will be fixed, or people will start leaving.
I think thigns break even at some point. It is so frustrating that it becomes no longer attractive to pursue GC (If we have not already reached that point).
You got to be open to change to survive, be it a person or a country. No point in predicting death before GC or any such extreme cases. It will definetely take as long as it needs. Its basic capitalism at best , supply and demand. You can't beat that.

I think we will GC sooner than anticipated. I think those who filed in July/Aug will get in three/four years. Just a rough estimate. Any one agrees with me?
If you are from India and your PD is 2006 or 2007, then forget about getting GC in 3 years unless there are legislative changes. Do the math yourself or refer to the umpteen threads here. The most optimistic case means the wait will be 5-7 years...

Does it make sense to file and FOIA request asking how USCIS is implementing quarterly spillover. As I understand it USCIS is not obligated to respond to a letter but they have to respond to FOIA. Any comments from people who know how FOIA works and whether it's applicable?

Of course these are related to immigration, let me tell you how:
Picture of lord Ganesha will make more beer sell. More beer will have two consequences one employment level will increase plus people will be more energized drinking these beers. So in both cases it will increase the well being of Indians.
So this means, Manamohan Singh and other MPs will drink these beers a whole lot and sign the Nuclear deal. Once the nuclear deal is signed more elctricity will be generated and hence more beer.
That will increase the the well being of Indians further.
Once a certain level of standard of living is reached no one would want to come to the USA
If no one wants to come to the USA , naturally the green card line will become short.
If the green card line is shortned then...

Finally, per Ron unused is not same as wasted. Unused is unassigned. Wasted is .... assigned but action is not taken to close the case. If that is the case then wasted visas won't be available ....

I have heard from people who have worked there that Socialism has eaten away at the insides of the European economy so much that they do not care if an immigrant helps them make more money. Unlike the capitalist US that accepts immigrants (at least to some extent) that bring economic benefit, the EU is one big xenophobic amalgamation of countries.
Well - though white racists may oppose - anything related to economy and development does go through.
I personally think that if this proposal goes through - EU will be the next melting pot.
Racism is there everywhere, we find it in US also, even in India, you find caste system and inter state racism. With rising opportunities, such things may not really be visible especially in places where there are free zones.

I dont think USCIS intends to take out the visa numbers for them.
DOS (who publishes the visa bulletin) wants USCIS to take out the numbers....but USCIS sits all day scratching their bottoms & not approving any cases with current priority dates.
P.S : Pardon my crassness; but people waiting in line would definitely understand frustration.
