However, as far as access to some information and benefits goes, this can be restricted to members. If you think this issue impacts you as severely as it does, why the hesitation to ensure something gets done about it, and get regular access to information and benefits without the clutter?

I dont think it's a good idea. The fundraising thread demonstrates that we do have people who understand the stakes and are willing to do something about it. Ofcourse we need a lot more money but we should be able to persuade people to contribute voluntarily. I don't like exclusive clubs

I have been a member for a while now and have seen the benefits of IV. I've also seen a lot of back and forth in various thrreads betweeen various members in various issues and subjects. Before any one starts checking if I have contributed, let me assure you I have ....for the DC rally. Why? because deep down I believe in this org. No one forced me to contribute, no one asked me to have to come to this or that meeting. I live in Wisconsin but have not been able to attend any sub commitee meetings In Milwaukee because of circumstances both personal and official. I need not explain to anyone in more detail. What I mean by this is we need to set our boundries of expectations. How much do we practically expect out of members and how much can be done by a much more core group. Someone who RSVP but dont turn up should technically be a non issue, its definetly bad for the organizer and the core group, but are we hear to teach people courtesy? Its an intangible expectation. When we set this level of expectation lower, we will strain oursleves to a lesser extent. The bottom line is human behaviour and circumstances that model that behaviour and any other external circumstances cannot be changed.
I second any idea that keeps membership open and does not restrict access if one has not paid. However in order for any legislation to happen we all know that $$ is the bottom line. So when ever we need it, we must raise as much as we can. We have to let people come to the web site browse and leave at their will. Restricting access is like closing doors and no popular internet model works like this. Take google, yahoo, hotmail, everythign is still free and has been free and is the most popular. Open source is also more popular than paid software. We have a majority of members who log in from the office or home, and we have to let these people in. Our successes should inspire people (it inspired me) to pay. I will contribute again and also join my state chapter very soon, but my only gripe is when we have emotional members who role play people and call other people names. We dont need to go there. If we are arguing over the internet like this how long will it take us to break into a fight in a state chapter meeting?
Take the anology of our freedom struggle. Did the british grant freedom only to freedom fighters ? How many so called *fence sitters* did we have then? Eventually everyone got freedom. How did we raise money to have morchas and satyagrahas? All that needed money, time and sacrifice too..I dont want to go too deep into this analogy as it is just an example and may not be entirely 100% perfect for the scenario we are in, but its close.
P.S The opinion I have expressed is entirely mine. I have no personal gripes against any one person and have not taken any names. If you dont like what I posted ignore it. Its freedom to express ourselves that will get us to where we need to.

SERVICE CENTERS HOLDING ADJUSTMENT APPLICATIONS
(Greg Siskind's Blog)
USCIS service centers are holding adjustment applications filed based on the initial July Visa Bulletin. Some applications received on the first business day were returned, but all applications since then are being held and not returned. One can speculate on the reason, of course. Possibly USCIS is preparing for a loss in litigation. Possibly they are preparing to cave sooner. Let the speculation begin....

Suggestions to everyone wanting to file I485 when their date is not current:
- Talk to the leaders of this campaign. Do not just sit back after voting. Ask what help they need and what work you can do as a volunteer. People affected need to take lead and work hard for any fix. This will not cost you any money. All you need to give is your time.
- Consider signing up for recurring contributions every month. It takes lot of resources to run an advocacy effort and your support is critical.

There have been thousands of instances where applicants have been disqualified from applying for GC and even their H1B revoked when initial degree was found to not be related to the occupation - examples: B.Com, B.Sc (Bio, Geology..except Physics/Math), B.Arch.
USCIS is now very strict. :( -but for the betterment of the whole system.
It goes by how requirements were specified on LC. If you put proper wordings on LC B.Com, B.Sc. are OK for EB3 .
But for EB2 they want Four year degree for Indian graduates.

Lets move on and focus on this main topic...
Here are my observations.. Correct me if I am wrong..
1. L1 option for IT is essentially killed
2. Small IT companies will limit the headcount to 50 per company. It doesn't cost much to have more than one company. So no major changes to H1B Desi companies.
3. Most of the big American companies will not offer new H1B with 180 days, since most of them would have had layoffs.
4. Most IT companies will start spending a lot on lawyers. So they will be rich. There will be lot of audits.
5. Companies will complete PERM and I140 before getting a guy onsite, only if people are really interested in coming to USA any longer.
6. Need more clarity on where H1B outsourcing will be stopped...
Good recap. This bill is not about liberating employees. This bill is to kill H1Bs and L1s irrespective of whether the company is a consulting company or a direct employer.
Net result ? more outsourcing. Big outsourcing firms have enough experienced employees on their payroll to do outsourcing effectively.
If this bill passes, it will be a shameful day for USA.

IMO Volunteering and contribution are not separate. It's member buy-in. Either you agree to a principle or you don't. If you agree, you'll contribute as well as volunteer (when you can). If you don't agree, you don't.

I am a registered member not contributing financially so far. I beliefs are as fake as "reverse brain drain". I am neither fake nor anti immigrant. I am not a citizen of the USA nor a permanent member to be anti immigrant. But I always like to try and see if I can walk a mile in their shoes before making tall claims about anything. I beleive the USA govt will really stop the reverse brain drain if it is that big an issue for them without even we trying to tell them.
There is so much lineup for GC's in the US answers your question on brain-drain. When someone talks of reverse brain-drain, that just means that there are some people who are not trying to stay back here, or are returning back if it does not work out quickly. It does not mean that no one is trying to migrate to the US, and there are long lines for migration from US to China/India etc. Facts speak for itself. What you say might happen in 50 yrs, but that is not the case today.

smisachu,
here is what i have figured out in last 4 year and i have been to various blogs.
1. i have read various blogs all are saying trading options with all good stuff you can hardly make any money. Most of the term you have used i have some idea what its is , but havent studied it properly.
There is no silver bullet that will make money all the time. If some one says so he is lying. Options can give you a chance to minimize risk but also cap profits. And you can be wiped out in options routinely. However in stocks it is a rare event when your stock goes to zero.
2. trading is gambling- you can have some edge by stastical analysis what have performed well over a long time. so backtest u r system over 10 years.
Trading is most certainly gambling, even fixed income. You can build a model and hedge to reduce risk and make it a calculated gamble but still a gamble..
3. would like to know what kind returns are you targeting with options
Most professional option traders generate income by writing options. Writing options are very risky as you have a theoretical loss probability reaching infinity. Forming synthetic positions will minimize risk but you might bleed hedging the position. A seller of option is long theta and short delta; a buyer of options is short theta and long delta. Think of theta as the time factor and delta as the hedge factor to put simply. If you sell a call option you have to hedge the option by buying delta units of the underlying stock. And when the call is at the money or near you will end up buying the stock high and selling the stock low, thus loosing money. Black and Scholes famously showed that in an option trade you can delta hedge the risk away. This is not possible and their model is flawed. But it is simple and intuitive and every one serious in trading options NEEDS to learn the model. You dont have to know the derivation but just the model, and the partial differential equation. I can talk about the flaw and the smile and smile dynamics but many of these concepts need to be drawn out and very hard to explain with out drawing.
4. spreads can be an way to go ..but has to be directional bet or else difficult. I have seen lot of iron condor guys breaking down in recent melt down and up.
Any model will work only for certain duration. That is why you need to keep running it and that is why quants have jobs. In stat arb sometimes you run models 3 times or more a day. I mean complicated mathematical models getting data from a provider and running large data sets to find the mean. And then trade when the stock diverges from the mean.
Each strategy or model has shelf life, so you need to keep researching and running new models.
Spreads are a good way of limiting down side while also capping upside. Volatility spreads are the most profitable ones and again short straddle makes money almost 95% of times but the 5% when they loose they will loose big. You need to have a certain limiting conditions and then hedge the spread with in this range. Usually you will make a little or loose a little. Sometimes you will hit a home run. It is easy to show this on a graph
5. so i kind of believe in hit and run and momentum play - what else can make you money where nothing is certain
I dont trade momentum, swing or technical indicators. But there are profitable traders who do this.
6. buying when rsi2 is depressed and selling quickly - can be spread havent back tested it.
i backtest using stockfetcher. but u cant backtest options, you have to manually do it. itried some using think or swim platform.
Relative strength Index, McClellan RSI(2) and Oscillators can be an indicator of stock movement. Relating it to the option market is abstract but I think possible. But I feel the options will already be priced in for such potential movements in the underlying. A very good quant I know always says any new strategy will first manifest itself in the derivatives market before equity as the players there are much more sophisticated.
I am not sure which retail trading platform has good back testing, try options first with scottrade. I use Bloomberg which has loads of functions like OVME-GO where you can back test , simulate and see the volatility surface.
so i am trying to see if anybody else has any good strategy to share.
There are many good strategies but I have no idea on sophistication of each individual. For example right now you can sell credit default swaps on Goldman sachs medium senior secured notes and hedge it with delta units of binary in-the-money call options on the VIX. This will give you synthetic exposure to the notes with steady cash flow and the binaries are cheap. If goldman defaults the VIX will sky rocket giving you a handsome payout better than what you will have to pay on the senior secured notes because of high recovery rate if all the default climbs up to the senior tranche. Actually this would be equal to the end of the world in todays market.
Or better yet just buy SPX and sit, the market is doing all the work for you.
The US natural gas market is in contango (I swear this is not jargon:o, there is no other term). So buy long dated/leap calls at the money now. In 2 years you will be so deep in the money you wont know what to do. But average retail investor cannot hedge this as he cannot trade spot.
So I guess my point is there are sophisticated ways to make money for which the average retail investor has no access to. If there is a simple way then it has already been exploited under the no-arbitrage clause of free markets.
If you have 2-5 year horizon. Go long the market and sit on it would be my best advice. If people want to meet and share ideas I am open to it. I live in NJ so NY/NJ is fine spot to meet.

I don't think the only reason is "wife's cannot work".. The other reason for most is changing employers, and career growth while I-485 is in process.
You can keep changing employers once your I-140 is approved. You need to restart ur GC process but you can keep ur PD (if not revoked) and get a 3 year extension immediately based on the Approved I-140.
Sure it's not the best case scenario, but atleast you CAN do it. But for most married folk their spouses on H4 CANNOT work without EADs or waiting a year till the H1 quota opens. Even with the quota opening unless your spouse is into business or IT it is VERY tough to get an H1 for the spouse.
