The perfect look: Angelina Jolie is being lined up to play Cleopatra in a new film, based on the book Cleopatra: A Life
It's one of the most infamous films of all time - nearly bankrupting 20th Century Fox.
So Angelina Jolie must be hoping the new version of Cleopatra will be less controversial than it's predecessor.
The actress has been named as the likely choice to play the legendary Queen of Egypt.
The film's producer, Scott Rudin, told USA Today the role is being developed with Angelina in mind as she has 'the perfect look'.
Onscreen lovers? Brad Pitt has been suggested as Marc Anthony to Angelina's Cleopatra
It is being directed by Ocean’s 11's Steven Soderberg, who originally planned to turn Cleopatra into a $30 million 3D epic starring Catherine-Zeta Jones and Hugh Jackman.
Elizabeth Taylor portrayed the murderous queen in 1963.
During filming she met and fell in love with Richard Burton, who played Marc Anthony.
The pair were both already married and their affair, divorces and eventual marriage caused a major scandal.
The Taylor and Burton version was the highest grossing film of the year.
However the cost of production, $44million, left it $42million over budget and meant the studio still made a loss.
Angelina herself is no stranger to scandal, after falling in love with Brad Pitt while co-starring in Mr And Mrs Smith, when he was married to Jennifer Aniston.
However it seems Pitt needn't worry about history repeating itself.
Author Stacey Schiff, who wrote the book, Cleopatra: A Life, on which the film is to be based, told USA Today about her ideal choice for Marc Antony.
'Brad Pitt,' she said, adding, 'Brangelina are the Burton/Taylor of our day, reconciling and breaking up within a day in the tabloids.'
The Pulitzer Prize winning author agreed with Rudin that Angelina was ideal to play the lead.
'I think she’d be perfect for it and I can see a possible Oscar in her future,' she said.
Rudin’s other credits include No Country for Old Men and Revolutionary Road.
